“Replacing plastic with bamboo” is developing rapidly. What impact will it have on the plastic industry?
Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems facing mankind. Against the background of the global efforts to strengthen the governance of plastic pollution, many new ideas for the governance of plastic pollution have begun to emerge. Among them, “replacing plastic with bamboo” has been developing more and more rapidly in recent years.
In particular, the introduction of the “Three-Year Action Plan for Accelerating the Development of “Replacing Plastic with Bamboo”” has provided a clear direction for promoting the high-quality development of “replacing plastic with bamboo” and injected strong momentum.
Since the beginning of this year, in order to further promote the full-chain governance of plastic pollution and accelerate the development of the “replacing plastic with bamboo” industry, many places have also issued policies and measures to support the development of the “replacing plastic with bamboo” industry. For example, recently, the Anhui Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, the Provincial Department of Finance, the Provincial Forestry Bureau and other departments jointly issued the “Implementation Plan for Accelerating the Development of “Replacing Plastic with Bamboo” in Anhui Province”.
The plan clarifies four key tasks and proposes to strive to maintain the bamboo forest area of the province above 400,000 hectares by 2027, build a national bamboo germplasm resource bank, and build a provincial bamboo germplasm resource bank. There are more than 100 leading enterprises in the bamboo industry, with a comprehensive output value of 60 billion yuan, and 3-5 bamboo-based new material products with high technological content and broad application prospects have been developed and promoted. Compared with 2022, the comprehensive added value of the main products of “substituting bamboo for plastic” will increase by more than 25%, and the comprehensive utilization rate of bamboo materials will increase by 25 percentage points.
In June, the Sichuan Provincial Development and Reform Commission issued the “Sichuan Provincial Policy Measures to Support the Development of the “Substituting Bamboo for Plastic” Industry” (hereinafter referred to as the “Measures”). According to the “Measures”, Sichuan’s support for the “substituting bamboo for plastic” industry involves six aspects, including promoting industrial agglomeration development, actively expanding application scenarios, carrying out key technology research, and increasing financial and financial support, with a total of 19 measures.
The measures propose to build bamboo industry agglomeration areas, expand the special raw material base for “substituting bamboo for plastic”, and support the large-scale intensive production of “substituting bamboo for plastic” products. Promote the construction of “substituting bamboo for plastic” application and promotion bases in areas with rich bamboo resources and good bamboo industry foundation. Increase the efforts to cultivate enterprises, attract leading processing enterprises of “substituting bamboo for plastic”, and promote the development of key bamboo product enterprises.
At present, the “bamboo instead of plastic” industry is developing rapidly, and there will undoubtedly be more development opportunities in the next few years. Will its rapid development have a big impact on the plastic industry? In this regard, industry analysts said that although bamboo can replace plastic to complete some tasks in daily life, for daily consumer goods, plastic has an irreplaceable characteristic – thermoplastic molding, which makes it easy to make the desired shape with plastic.
In this context, bamboo cannot completely replace plastic. In comparison, industries such as recycled plastics, plastic recycling, and plastic recycling will have greater room for development. It is reported that the current domestic policy support for resource recycling has also been increased. On June 7, according to the Henan Provincial People’s Government Information Office held a regular briefing on provincial government policies, Henan Province will build a deep processing industry chain. Closely connect with the cultivation of Henan Province’s “7+28+N” industrial chain group, focus on building 7 industrial chains such as recycled steel, recycled aluminum, recycled plastics, and recycled paper, strengthen deep integration with downstream deep processing enterprises, and improve and enhance the circular economy industry chain.
In general, at a time when both China and foreign countries attach great importance to the circular economy and continuously introduce carbon footprint labels and carbon tax policies, for plastics companies, if they want to achieve better development, they still have to work harder on the innovation and upgrading of plastic recycling products and technologies.
